The best network marketing companies are not always the ones that are the most heavily promoted. If you are looking for a new network marketing or MLM

(multi level marketing) opportunity, don’t just go for the first one that you see. Here are 10 points to consider when judging your possible new biz opp.

1. Do not join anything where no product or service is offered and you are being asked to pay for a place in the matrix only. That is a pyramid scheme, and they are illegal in most countries.

2. Stay away from companies that require that you pay excessive amounts up front for marketing materials or product samples that you will not use, especially if you are being asked for a lot more than the items are worth. This could be an attempt by the company to get around the pyramid scheme laws.

3. Avoid programs that say you will make money without doing any work. In some plans you can earn something from people put in under you by your upline, but a legitimate scheme will always expect you to do some work by bringing in and supporting some of those people yourself. Most people joining network marketing programs leave in the first 3 months without having sponsored anybody, so to make any serious money from your downline you will have to be constantly replacing the dropouts. At first, expect most of your income to come from promoting the product, not the opportunity.

4. Do some thorough research on the company. Is it well established? If it is just starting up, it may still be a good opportunity, but check who the directors are and what they have been involved in before. Start-ups can be lucrative if they become popular and you are in near the top, but there is also a bigger risk that they will fail.

5. Do not get involved with ‘miracle products’ where the claims seem unrealistic. For every customer who claims to have had amazing results, there could be 100 others who thought it was useless.

6. If the product is a good one, does your local drugstore sell something similar to it? If it does, is there a good reason why your prospect should buy from you instead of their drugstore? And if the drugstore doesn’t sell a similar product, why not? Is it legal?

7. If you could use the product yourself, ask if you can try it before you commit. If not, can you talk to people who have used it, so that you get a clear idea of its benefits? You will find it much easier to sell something that you genuinely believe in.

8. You may be shown testimonials from people who are earning a lot of money with the program. Remember that those people may be founder members or have years of network marketing experience and thousands of contacts. Understand that it will probably take you a few years of hard work to reach that level.

9. Do not sign any contracts at the first meeting. You need time to research the company for yourself, and probably discuss it with your spouse, lawyer or accountant.

10. When you have found a company with a good product and a solid multi level marketing plan, remember that you will need to invest both time and money to build a business, even with the best network marketing companies.

Most everyone belongs to some kind of a club or group. Perhaps it is a civic group, or a service club, or a church group, or even a family group. How

often have you attended a “meeting” of your group, and not spent any time getting to know the people in the group? Too often groups are only concerned with agendas, reports, useless chitchat and weather reports, or getting business done. Life is too short to miss the opportunities to get to know people better and foster meaningful relationships.

People love to talk about themselves, their interests, their families and their life experiences. And, if you listen carefully, you can learn a lot about them as they share these things. The problem is that unless they are asked, they probably won’t tell. Then there is the additional issue of limited time in most club or group meetings. Good news… it can be done, if done briefly and regularly.

One president of a Kiwanis club (a community service club) uses a very effective “exercise” in the beginning of the club’s meeting. To officially start the meeting, the members are asked to all stand, do the pledge to the flag, have a brief prayer (some clubs follow with a song), then sit down and proceed with the meeting. But, before letting the members sit down, this leader had them ask one or two people a specific question, or had them tell someone a certain something about themselves. And, low and behold, the members started learning things about one another… and relationships started developing.

So, here are some suggestions for the types of directives and questions to use.

Things related to certain times and seasons:

What was your most memorable Christmas?
What was your most embarrassing birthday surprise?
What is your favorite part of Thanksgiving?
Where were you on 9/11?
Tell someone your favorite summer vacation.
Tell someone about the hottest day you remember - where you were and the temperature.
Tell some one your favorite time of year, and why.

Things related to people and places:

What is your favorite color, and why?
What is your favorite food?
Who are you most like… your mom or dad?
Where did you meet your spouse?
Who is your “hero” and why?
If you could be someone from the past, who and why?
Tell the funniest statement you’ve heard from a child (maybe it was you).
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
If you could “fix” or change one thing in the world today, what would it be?
Tell someone your middle name, and why it was given to you.
Tell the funniest joke (keep it clean) you can think of.

Using these to get you thinking, and a little creativity, you can come up with many more. Think about the things you would like to know about those with whom you associate. Think about what you would like to tell others, if they would only listen… then start asking and telling.

This allows you to focus your time on building relationships with the people who are really interested.

3) Leadership Systems ? Leadership systems help you develop your team?s success. Out of all network marketing systems, this is the one that helps you to create duplication. You can be great at creating interested people and closing the sale, but if you don?t have a system for helping your team, then you will hit a plateau that no amount of effort will break through. A good leadership system will help you discover, develop, and deploy new leaders. It will also help you assimilate new team members, communicate with the team, train the team, and build relationships among the team.

If you feel like you don’t know how to talk to people of the opposite sex, you might be onto something!

Men and women definitely have different

ways of communicating. Learning how the other half uses language will help to improve your communication with the opposite sex.

And if you’re still not convinced, there is even a term that is specific to the different languages of the sexes. The term is genderlect. Suzette Haden Elgin coined the term in her book, Genderspeak. Her book talked about different methods men and women could use to better communicate.

Deborah Tannen went into even more detail about gender communication in her book, entitled You Just Don’t Understand: Men and Women in Conversation (1990, Ballantine.) Tannen says that even when a man and woman are raised in the same neighbourhood or even in the same home they will grow up in different language worlds.

The question of how to talk to people of the opposite sex really needs to first be answered by understanding the ways men and women differ in how they express themselves.

Here are some of the biggest differences, starting at a very young age:

1. Girls talk or use language as a way to be liked. Little boys often talk to be boastful.

2. A little girl will request something. A boy? He makes demands.

3. Girls tend to use language as a way to create harmony - to get closer to someone. If you guessed that young boys keep conflicts going by talking, you are right!

4. Girls talk using words and will use more words to explain something. A young boy is more likely to use actions to emphasize what he is trying to say.

As we grow and learn how to talk to people, being aware of these differences can help (especially when the people you are talking to are of the opposite sex.)

Many of those early traits continue, as we grow older. Men will continue to use communication as a means of staying independent, while women will continue to use language as a tool for intimacy.

Grown-up men often will talk to establish status (remember the boasting as little boys?) Women will connect themselves to others by using language to build up rapport.

Tannen calls these differences ‘report-talk’ (men) and ‘rapport-talk’, for the women. Understanding this one specific difference can really show how women quite often take what men say, personally, when they really were only ‘reporting’ on a situation.

Learning how to talk to people is made a lot simpler when you understand genderlect - the language of the sexes.

Dale Carnegie famously pointed out that you can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying

to get other people interested in you.

Although Dale Carnegie died in 1955, his work in personal development lives on. His classic book, How to Win Friends and Influence People was first published in 1937 and is considered the grandfather of all ‘people skill’ books since then.

Because of his great understanding of human nature, his books and fundamental teachings are just as popular today. In fact, the title of his book is so widely used as a phrase, that some people who say it that may not even know where the phrase ‘how to win friends and influence people’ comes from.

Here are his six principles in making people like you:

1. Become genuinely interested in other people.

I think we’ve all met someone that pretend to be interested in you but you can sense that they really aren’t. There doesn’t seem to be anything genuine about these types of people. We tend to label them ‘phoney.’ This is probably one case where fake it until you make won’t work. So, how do you become genuinely interested in other people? You’ll want to ask them questions. Learn what they do, what they like. Everyone likes to talk about him or herself. Get them to talk about their dreams!

2. Smile.

Not much to add, here. When you walk into a room with a smile on your face, you might as well be carrying a people magnet.

3. Use a person?s name.

Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Just like in the old romantic movies: “Oh, John… John!” “Oh, Mary, dear Mary!”

4. Be a good listener.

Encourage others to talk about themselves. When you do this with a sincere and genuine interest in the other person you cannot fail to encourage that person to feel appreciated and valued. This is a key trait of anyone who has mastered people skills.

5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.

Again, this principle stresses making time to listen to others to find out what is of interest to them. Let their interests guide the direction of the conversation and you will enjoy a solid rapport that encourages friendship.

6. Make the other person feel important - and do it sincerely.

This cannot be faked for long. Look for the good in others and respect other viewpoints, beliefs and lifestyles. Even ones that do not make sense to you. This flexibility is important if you are to respect the other person.

His last three points, tie into the first. How to win friends and influence people is a book that reminds us that anything you do from a place of fellowship will have a good result. He uses this fable to prove his point:

The sun and the wind were arguing about who was the strongest. The wind pointed at an old man. The wind said that he’d prove his strength by getting the man to remove his coat. He blew and howled and blew some more.

The old man clung to his coat more than ever. When the wind finally gave up, the sun came out from behind a cloud and shone brightly. Soon the man was wiping his forehead and removing his coat.

I attend a variety of networking events and marvel at the basic and banal mistakes I see would-be networkers making. It?s enough to make me want to write

Networking is about meeting new people, letting them meet you, and prospecting for sales, jobs, contracts, clients and more. Ineffective networking tires you out and discourages you by its lack of productivity. Worse yet, on occasion, you can actually leave a bad impression with strangers. Beware the following networking mistakes.

Nine Mistakes Networkers Make
Bad networkers mumble!
A mumble is a speaking stumble. People mumble their name, their occupation and their titles all the time. Your name is irrelevant if we can?t hear it. You?ve been saying your name all your life so you may be bored with it, yet we may only hear it once. State your name clearly, slowly and in a way that we can repeat and remember it. It?s your lifeline to contact. Take care in stating it. (For an article on the importance of Names visit

Poor networkers don?t emphasize the benefits, just the features of what they do.
Remarkably, too many salespeople still focus on the features of their products and services instead of the end-results. Customers buy benefits, solutions and outcomes. Speak their language by focusing on what you and your products or services can do for them, not just what it can do or how it does it. Example: It?s about the results of your new sales device, not its bells and whistles. How does it increase or expedite sales and what is the resulting ROI to its users?

Monotonal delivery.
If you can?t convey your qualifications, passion and your product or service?s viability in 30 seconds you?ve lost. Use vocal variety, intonation and enthusiasm to speak confidently about yourself, your products and services. (Toastmasters, www.toastmasters.org, can help you improve your conversational voice.)

?Spiel? too long.
Networking is not speechmaking. You have a finite window of opportunity to introduce yourself and your offerings, and glean a few details about the person you?re talking to, their needs and wants. You can?t recite a datasheet, tell your life story or otherwise drone on. Keep it short and sweet!

Unfocused conversation.
Networking is a chance to demonstrate focus, drive and confidence. Aimless rambling is pointless, and suggests you?re not a focused professional. Showcase your communication skills by expressing yourself succinctly and ask precise questions.

Leakage.
Is there is an inconsistency between what you say and what you do? Your card may say one thing about you, your clothing suggests something else and the language and vocabulary you use further confounds strangers in getting a fix on who you are, what you are about and your competency level. Strive to send consistent messages verbally, non-verbally and in your collateral materials and correspondence. When everything works together, the sum is greater than its parts.

You don?t mind your manners.
Bad networkers can?t make small talk, don?t show an ability to exchange pleasantries and interrupt others. Can you gracefully engage and disengage from conversations? Are your questions intrusive and your answers curt? Are you showing proper respect for the stranger you?ve just met? Or are you singing Opera? If so, your tune is familiar: It?s “Me-Me-Me-Me-Me!”

Slinging Slang.
Many networkers profess to have excellent communication skills yet use slang or mispronounce big words when little words are better. Beware the use of contractions, excessive acronyms and name-dropping too. Don?t tell us what you?re gonna do! I would like to hear what you are going to do instead.

Disrespect the Tao of Networking.
Networkers who are obsequious to those they believe can help them, yet rude to those they believe can?t help them, disrespect networking. I?ve had networkers disparage the last person they met while in conversation with me. I was afraid to let them go for fear of what they would next say about me! That?s antithetical to the spirit of networking. One networker took my card and, in front of me, wrote the letter A on it, and boasted he was “putting me in his A list.” Let?s just say he was clearly the biggest A I met that night! Learn from the Japanese culture which respects the business card as an extension of the individual it represents. Don?t write on it in front of others, read and react to it with proper respect, and yours will be similarly received.

How many times have you been told it was possible to earn a full-time income in network marketing by sponsoring friends, family, neighbors, coworkers…

your “warm market”, only to find out that it wasn’t true?

If you’re like 90% of network marketers, you’re struggling to earn even the equivalent of minimum wage from your home business, and quitting your day job is still little more than a dream.

What’s missing from your network marketing business is a real business plan. Going after your “warm market” is a great business plan for your network marketing company because they have access to LOTS of “warm markets”. It’s a numbers game that works in their favor. Every one of their distributors is going to tell everyone they know about the product and the business opportunity… that’s a lot of free advertising, and some members of those “warm markets” will buy the products or become distributors themselves, and then tell everyone they know.

It works great for the network marketing companies. Any ROI on an advertising budget of nearly $0 is a great return. It doesn’t work so well for you though because you only have ONE “warm market”. ONE group of friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, etc. and very few of them are entrepreneurial enough to recognize a good opportunity when it’s presented to them… let alone risk their time, effort, and money pursuing that opportunity even if they do see it. The numbers don’t work in your favor. You simply can’t do enough volume within your “warm market”, so the “warm market” approach is a terrible business plan as far as your own business is concerned. If you’re persistent enough you probably will sign a few people up… but not enough for it to be worth your while.

A real business plan will correctly identify members of a “target market” and describe a system for communicating an offer to satisfy a want or need that exists within that group. Does handing out DVDs to everyone you know, and dragging them off to meetings for no reason other than you happen to know them sound like a real business plan?

It’s important to know that there’s a difference between a “target market” and a “warm market”. The network marketing companies call the people you have a personal relationship with a “warm market” because the people you know are “warm” to you… however, they usually aren’t very “warm” to the idea of starting a network marketing business. A “target market” on the other hand is an identifiable group of people who are likely to be interested in what you’re offering.

So, who is your target market?

It’s simple. Your target market is the 90% of network marketers who are not successful.

What do they need?

First, understand what they DON’T need. They DON’T need a new network marketing business opportunity… they already have one. Pitching your opportunity to them would be like trying to sell a car to someone who just bought a new one. They’re not in the market. They’ll probably be needing to fill the gas tank though.

What’s the fuel that runs a network marketing business? Generating leads… and sponsoring them.

To satisfy that need, you need to learn how to generate leads yourself and then build or acquire a system to communicate with them, and ultimately sponsor them… automatically. You’re halfway there now that you know who your target market is. Network marketers are easy to find on the Internet, in fact many of them have probably already found you… been spammed lately? Got a reply button?

The next step is to learn something about copy-writing, landing and capture pages, and sequential auto-responders. Learn the mechanics of putting together an automated lead generation and follow-up system, and then put one together. All the information you need in order to accomplish this is readily available, just search for it in Google.

If you don’t have the inclination to put such a system together on your own, then there are plenty of ready-made systems available to plug into and again Google can help you find them. Once you have your system in place don’t use it to send out marketing letters about your business opportunity. Use it to sell yourself, and the system you’ve created (or obtained), and to provide valuable information that will help others to succeed. Remember, your target market is looking for fuel… they’ve already got a vehicle. They’ll get into your vehicle with you once you’ve demonstrated your value to them.

Nobody gets into network marketing to sell vitamins, cosmetics, or anything else. They get into network marketing because they see it as a vehicle to achieve financial freedom. If they perceive your system as the fuel they need in order to take their network marketing career to the next level then they’ll be open to joining your team in order to use your system.

When you can step outside your “warm market” to generate qualified leads within your “target market”, and follow-up with them automatically… then you’ve basically got yourself a network marketing gas station. You’ve got something that 90% of network marketers want and need, and are actively seeking. Sponsoring many of those who go through your system and see value in it will be the natural result.
